How many of you LOVE to decorate for Christmas? (Insert me eagerly waving my hands and jumping up and down, similar to Will Ferrell’s character “Elf” in the movie with the same name, when he hears that Santa is coming) haha. It’s no secret that I love to decorate, but this year I thought I would do a more simple approach to Christmas dรฉcor! A little less of the bells and whistles and more of just simple garlands and wreaths with twinkle lights.
It’s no doubt my favorite time of year and I can’t wait to show you a few ways that I’ve decorated our home, and maybe it will inspire you for something in your own home. ๐ So, sit back with your cup of tea, coffee, wine, or hot chocolate, and enjoy.
Today’s post is in the Kitchen. When you walk in the front door, it looks straight to the Kitchen table, so I love having the table and that corner decorated with something festive. ( It’s never usually a 7 foot tree. ๐ )
I have always been an artificial tree kind of girl. Mostly because as a kid I was allergic to a real tree, so my Mom always used artificial and then I continued that in my own home. But the last two years my husband has been mentioning getting a real tree. Now, if my Bah Humbug husband has just a little spark of Christmas spirit, you can bet I’m going to run with that idea, and also, real trees are so beautiful. Hopefully my allergy has improved or you will be seeing our tree out in the yard, not twinkling in the window. Haha.
I have a beautiful flocked tree that for the last 3 Christmas’ has been in the living room. I love it so much that I hated the thought of not having it out. So I decided to put Totaldentalcare in the kitchen. ๐ I pushed it as far in the corner as I could so it wouldn’t feel like it was in the way, and moved the table a bit, and…. it fits!! I’m still not sure if I’m going to leave it bare or decorate. I like it both ways and thought that by leaving it bare, it will look less cluttered in my smaller kitchen.
I decided last year while I was putting away all the Christmas decorations, that I would try decorating for Christmas 2019 just a little different. I was looking at all the modern farmhouse decorations on Pinterest and other blogs and local families’ homes with big heart eyes and fell in love with all of it! Sometimes it only takes a simple garland or wreath with some lights, or a few trees and your house can look so festive. I also wanted to make it less complicated and less time consuming, with simple (real looking) decorations with not many bulbs and things in “excess”. Now, in theory (or in my head) that would seem like it should work. Haha. But in reality, I’m a bit of a perfectionist, and if things don’t look pleasing to my eyes, I can’t leave it that way, ๐ So while the dรฉcor looks simple, some of the areas still took me a while to decide what to put there. I have many decorations that are special to me and/or love but sometimes I can’t decide, or find a spot to place them so I end up taking forever to decorate because I never put things in the same spot from year to year. It takes me days of tweaking. Haha.
Artificial cedar, prelit wreath, hung with a 3M hook and a set of antique finish bells on the closet door in the entry.
A simple way to hide sale flyers and magazines, pretty basket with artificial, snowy greenery.
After Halloween, I usually start to plan out where or how I’m going to decorate for the holidays. If you are looking for something particular, I recommend buying it in November, not when you are actually decorating in December. If you wait, chances are it is already out of stock. So this year I purchased some “real” looking garlands and a couple of new wreaths before they were gone, from Canadian Tire. I had also been eyeing up a basket tree base instead of a tree skirt for the base of the Christmas tree. So I purchased that on Wayfair in early November. You can see it in the picture below. (Make sure you measure the base of the tree you want it for.)
Some artificial cedar garland that comes pre lit around the window, and some pine scented dish soap, make washing dishes seem less of a chore. Haha. The garland is hung with 3M command hooks at each corner of the window frame.
Cozy baking corner – I tried a few different things in this corner before I got the look I wanted.
My Grandmother (who’s passed now almost 5 years) used to make fudge for Christmas. Her and my Grandfather (he passed in 1995) spent many Christmas’ when we were kids at our house. I can’t make fudge well, so in her memory, I put out the recipe card. It’s not her handwriting but the memories are there when I glance at it while working at the cupboard.
This antique Santa mug from when I was a kid, is still also a favorite. Filled with some holiday flavored tea ๐
I thought these mugs below, from amazon were cute.
I love white, and I love snowflakes, so this table runner was a favorite new addition this year as well. It’s from Prestige Kitchens so I don’t think I can find a link for it.
The tree is hiding the clock, but I’m ok with that ๐
I’m always drawing a blank when it comes to a table centre piece. So I chose something simple. The cake stand will hold some mini gingerbread houses after this weekend. ๐
A simple nod to the Christmas tree on the windowsill brings a bit of cheer to dishwashing. haha
Most of the items in this post have come from Canadian Tire, Wayfair, Home Sense or Winners. When I started searching both Canadian Tire and Wayfair websites, the items were no longer in stock. So I thought I’d browse on Pier 1 for some pretty things to share that might have been similar to what is in my kitchen, there were so many pretty things and they are all ON SALE, I thought I would just share the link right to the website. https://www.pier1.ca/christmas#nav=top You can see the “shop the post” for individual items that I thought were cute.
And that’s it! If only my kitchen always looked this clean haha.
What are some things you like to do or decorate in your kitchen for the holidays?
